FRIENDSHIPS
When people disappoint you.Friendships can be one of the best parts of life—and sometimes one of the hardest.
Maybe you feel left out. Maybe someone you trusted hurt you. Maybe a friendship is changing and you don’t know why. Or maybe you’re wondering whether a friendship is actually good for you.
God cares about the people you surround yourself with, the kind of friend you become, and what happens when relationships get complicated.
You can love people without losing yourself. Not every friendship will last forever.
Some friendships grow with you. Some change. Some need boundaries. And some may need to end.
That doesn’t mean every difficult friendship should be abandoned—but it also doesn’t mean you have to ignore hurtful behavior just to keep someone in your life.
Healthy friendship should make room for honesty, kindness, forgiveness, growth, and mutual respect.
Ask yourself:
Does this friendship help me become more like the person God is calling me to be?
Good friendship points you toward what is good.Truth to come back to
PROVERBS 17:17 — NLT 17 A friend is always loyal,
and a brother is born to help in time of need.
PROVERBS 27:17 — NLT 17 A friend is always loyal,
and a brother is born to help in time of need.
ECCLESIASTES 4:9–10 — NLT 9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.
JOHN 15:12–13 — NLT 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
1 PETER 5:7 — NLT 12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
What to remember when anxiety gets loud
Being left out hurts—but it does not mean something is wrong with you.
You can forgive someone without pretending what happened was okay.
Boundaries are not the same thing as being mean.
You cannot control whether someone chooses to be a good friend.
You can be kind without chasing people who repeatedly hurt you.
A friendship ending does not erase the good that once existed.
And you do not have to become bitter because someone disappointed you.
Protect your heart without hardening it.A prayer for right nowGod, relationships can be confusing, and sometimes I don’t know what to do.
Help me know which friendships to invest in, where I need to forgive, and where I may need healthier boundaries.
Show me if I have hurt someone or if there is something I need to make right.
Give me the courage to be honest, kind, loyal, and wise.
Help me stop chasing approval and remind me that my worth does not depend on whether everyone likes me.
Surround me with people who encourage what is good in me, and help me become that kind of friend to others.
Amen.
Look at the friendship clearly.
Think about the friendship that is weighing on you right now.
Ask yourself:
How do I usually feel after spending time with this person?
Can we disagree without tearing each other down?
Can I be honest without being afraid of losing the friendship?
Do we encourage each other toward good things—or pull each other away from them?
Is there something I need to forgive, apologize for, or set a boundary around?
Then choose one healthy next step.
It might be having a conversation.
It might be apologizing.
It might be forgiving.
It might be creating some space.
Or it might simply be praying before you decide what to do.
