COMPARISON & SOCIAL MEDIA
When everyone else seems ahead. It can be hard to feel good about your own life when you’re constantly seeing everyone else’s highlight reel.
Someone looks prettier. Someone has more friends. Someone is dating. Someone made the team. Someone is traveling, succeeding, celebrating, or living the life you wish you had.
Before long, scrolling can turn into comparing—and comparing can make you forget everything good God is doing in your own story.
Someone else’s life does not make yours less valuable. You were never meant to measure your life against theirs.
Social media can show you hundreds of lives in a few minutes.
But you are usually seeing the best moments, best angles, best news, and best versions people choose to share.
You don’t see every insecurity.
You don’t see every disappointment.
You don’t see the ordinary days behind the picture.
And you were never created to keep score against everyone you see online.
Ask yourself:
Is what I’m looking at helping me become who God created me to be—or making me feel like I need to become someone else?
You can appreciate someone else’s life without wishing yours away.Truth to come back to
GALATIANS 1:10 — NLT 10 Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.
JOHN 21:21–22 — NLT 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” 22 Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
ROMANS 12:2 — NLT 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
PHILIPPIANS 4:8 — NLT 8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
2 CORINTHIANS 10:12 — NLT 12 Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!
What to remember when comparison gets loud
Someone else being beautiful does not make you less beautiful.
Someone else succeeding does not mean you are failing.
Someone else being chosen does not mean you have been overlooked.
A picture cannot tell you the whole story.
Your timeline does not have to look like anyone else’s.
You do not have to prove your worth through likes, followers, comments, or attention.
And you are allowed to protect your peace from things that constantly make you question your value.
Their story is not your measuring stick.A prayer for right nowGod, sometimes I spend so much time looking at everyone else that I forget to be grateful for the life You have given me.
Help me recognize when comparison is changing the way I see myself.
Remind me that I do not need to look like someone else, live like someone else, or receive their approval to have worth.
Give me wisdom about what I allow into my mind and what I spend my time looking at.
Help me celebrate other people without believing their blessings mean You have forgotten me.
Teach me to pay attention to the life You are asking me to live.
Amen.
Change what you’re feeding your mind.
Think about how you usually feel after spending time on social media.
Ask yourself:
Do I usually leave encouraged—or feeling worse about myself?
Then choose one small step today.
Mute or unfollow an account that consistently makes you feel inadequate.
Take a break from the app that is consuming too much of your attention.
Stop checking likes or views for a while.
Follow people who encourage your faith, creativity, growth, and real life—not just your insecurities.
Then put the phone down and do something that reminds you that your real life is happening away from the screen.
You get to choose what gets your attention.Where do you want to go next?
