RELATIONSHIPS

When your heart feels complicated.

Relationships can make you feel seen, excited, confused, hurt, hopeful—or all of those things at once.

Maybe you’re wondering whether someone really cares about you. Maybe you’re trying to decide what healthy love should look like. Or maybe you’re holding onto a relationship because you’re afraid of what happens if you let it go.

God cares about your heart, your choices, your boundaries, and the way you treat the people you love.

Love should never require you to lose who you are.

Healthy love has room for truth.

A healthy relationship does not need manipulation, pressure, jealousy, fear, or constant uncertainty to keep it together.

Real care respects boundaries.

It makes room for honesty.

It does not ask you to compromise your convictions just to keep someone interested.

And it does not make your value depend on whether another person chooses you.

Ask yourself:

Can I be honest, respected, and still be myself in this relationship?

You should never have to trade your peace for someone’s attention.

Truth to come back to

1 CORINTHIANS 13:4–7 — NLT‍ ‍4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

PROVERBS 4:23 — NLT‍ ‍ 23 Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.

2 CORINTHIANS 6:14‍ ‍14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

EPHESIANS 4:2–3‍ ‍2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. 3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

MATTHEW 7:16–20 — NLT‍ ‍16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

What to remember when your heart is involved

Someone wanting you does not automatically mean they are good for you.

Chemistry is not the same thing as character.

You are allowed to have boundaries.

You do not owe anyone access to you because they are interested in you.

Constant jealousy, pressure, control, or disrespect are not signs of deep love.

You can care about someone and still recognize that a relationship is unhealthy.

Being single is not evidence that you are unwanted or behind.

Your worth was never waiting for someone else to choose you.
A prayer for right now

God, You know what I feel, even when I don’t completely understand it myself.

Give me wisdom about the relationships in my life.

Help me see people clearly instead of only seeing what I hope they will become.

Give me courage to keep healthy boundaries, to speak honestly, and to walk away from situations that are pulling me away from what is good.

Help me treat others with kindness and respect without depending on their attention for my worth.

Teach me to trust Your timing and to remember that being loved by You is not something I have to earn.

Amen.

Look beyond how it feels.

Think about the relationship you have been questioning.

Ask yourself:

Do I feel respected?

Can I say no without being punished, pressured, or guilted?

Does this relationship encourage my faith and values—or make me hide them?

Do their actions match their words?

Am I becoming healthier, wiser, and more peaceful—or more anxious, insecure, and confused?

You do not have to make every decision today.

But you can be honest about what you are seeing.

Pay attention to the fruit, not just the feelings.
